Welcome to LPN to RN

Welcome to LPN to RN. After a few years of work experience, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse, may feel that s/he is ready to move to the next level and become a Registered Nurse (RN). To do this you would need to look at LPN to RN programs. The benefits of becoming an RN are many, not only will you get better financial rewards, but there are more treatments you can administer, there is a better chance of getting promoted into nursing management, further down the line you can specialize, and overall its a more rewarding experience.

There are two basic path's you can take in LPN to RN, both of which lead you to becoming an RN. One is to go simple for the RN designation, this can be done in two ways, to go for an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or to do a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Both of these LPN to RN programs will allow you to take the NCLEX-RN and become an RN. The other possibility is to go for a Master's of Science in Nursing degree in the form of an accelerated LPN to RN program. This will also allow you to take the NCLEX-RN, however there are added benefits. These choices are discussed in more detail below.

If you already know what you are looking for in LPN to RN and want to get more detailed information about specific programs, take a look at the right hand column. It is a good idea to get some specific information on programs so that you have an idea what is on offer online in regards to LPN to RN programs.

LPN to RN - Benefits of Becoming an RNs

There are many benefits of becoming an RN. Not only will you get higher financial compensation, but the nature of the work tends to be more interesting. You tend to work more closely with the physician than as an LPN, so you will get a chance to really see the big picture in terms of treatments and patients.

In terms of career prospects, the area of nursing management becomes a simple hop away from being an RN. The hospital management usually will only consider RNs for becoming the unit nurse, staff nurse, or head nurse. Of course, if you have a BSN you will be able to move further up than with an ADN.

LPN to RN - Associates's vs Bachelor's

There are two ways to become an RN, one is to get an ADN, the other a BSN. Both of these LPN to RN programs get you basically the same thing, a chance to take and pass the NCLEX-RN. However, after high school an ADN takes two years and a BSN four years. So, what's the difference between these LPN to RN paths?

The difference is in the career prospects of an Associate's holding RN and a Bachelor's holding RN. The RN with a BSN can go into a basic level of specialization (more advanced levels require an MSN) and will be considered for promotion into nursing management. However, an ADN holding RN will not have these options open. Usually, most LPN to RN programs don't even have the option of getting an ADN, most LPN to RN programs entail getting a BSN.

An LPN to RN program that gets you a BSN usually takes about two years. Most of the time LPNs continue to work while pursuing their LPN to RN program online. If you have never done an online course before you may be hesitant, but the trend is moving for more and more online courses. The advantages of an online course are that its cheaper, it allows you to continue working, you can finish it at your own pace, and you tend to get good quality instructors. The down side to an online LPN to RN course is that you have to have some self discipline and be able to sit down and do the work, even when you are a tired after a day's work. Nonetheless, if you have even a little bit of self discipline you will enjoy the online course.

LPN to RN - Bachelor's vs Master's

Another option for an LPN looking to do an LPN to RN program is to go for an accelerated LPN to RN course which allows you to get both a BSN and and MSN in a total of three years. Though that may seem like a long time the benefits are many.

All of the advanced nursing practice specializations require an MSN. Advanced practice nurses may practice alone or with a physicians. This is really the highest in the realm of nursing. The specializations are: clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practices.

With an MSN, you will also be readily considered for movement into higher management, though to reach the highest echelons of management you will want to get an advanced management degree as well. An accelerated LPN to RN program will get you to these levels the quickest possible way. Take a look below for more detailed information regarding these LPN to RN programs.

LPN to RN - The Core of the Nursing Problem

Everyone knows there is a nursing shortage and that it is due to the baby boomers reaching an age at which they need more healthcare services. Many people are looking to do an LPN to RN program because they want to help provide these services. But the real reason we are short nurses is deeper.

To become a nursing instructor you would have to go through an LPN to RN program and on top of that do an advanced degree. But, you will get paid more if you just practice as an RN rather than teach as an instructor. So, few people opt to become nursing instructors which in turn means many people who want to do courses, like an LPN to RN program, get turned away because there aren't enough instructors. Of course, if you are doing an online LPN to RN course this isn't as much of a problem. But until we can solve the problem of the low pay of nursing instructors we will still have a nursing problem.
